Tiago Braga's Interview | Exclusive

Opinião Mobile interviewed the singer and YouTuber Tiago Braga. Keep reading to find out more about his career, the technology that he uses, and some of his future projects!

Welcome to our blog, Tiago! The next seven questions will be related to your career and the technology that you use.

1) Tiago does some covers and publishes original songs on YouTube. In which circumstances did you start making and publishing videos?

Ever since I found YouTube, back in 2009, I’ve been following several YouTubers that showcase their work online and I’ve seen excellent musicians creating and sharing music just for fun. Also, I’ve always had a huge passion for music, and after two years of music classes at the Music Conservatory of Gaia, around 2009 as well, I started to think about pursuing music in a more serious way. The passion I had for music, along with the discovery of YouTube made me realize that I could do what I liked without needing a record label or producers. Despite my shyness, in the summer of 2010 I ended up gaining enough courage to create a YouTube account. The first video I uploaded was a piano medley, which got very little but positive feedback, so I kept on uploading videos of me playing piano. Besides playing piano, I’ve always loved to sing as well, but whereas I knew that I wasn’t bad on the piano, because I had years of lessons and got very good feedback from my teachers, singing was a different thing, because I had never attended any singing lessons. In that same summer, me and some friends signed up for a musical summer camp, a Camp Rock style one, in which the participants had to upload a video of them performing two songs, according to the category to which they were applying to. I decided to take my chances and applied for the singing category, so I had to upload a video of me singing to YouTube. Thanks to that video, I was selected for the auditions and got a very positive feedback. I ended up not making it through in the final auditions, but I got very good critics from the jury, which gave me enough confidence to keep posting videos of me singing. I started to develop an interest in musical production and cinematography, and basically that’s how my videos got to what they are today.

2) If you had to describe your career up until now, how would you describe it?

Short, but very rewarding too. To be honest, I never thought things would get this far. I uploaded videos because I liked to make music and started to gain lots of followers that admired stuff that I did just for fun. Thanks to something that started as a summer hobby, I now have a channel with a YouTube Partnership status, with over 1 million and a half views and over 10 thousand subscribers. I’ve had the chance to meet and work with amazing musicians, perform live and go on TV. I’ve received tons of support from fans all across the globe, which is definitely the best part. To get messages from people I don’t know saying that my music has made their day better or that it has helped them through a tough situation, it’s an indescribable feeling. I’m not Alex Goot or Tyler Ward, I’m very far away from that, I’m just a boy that makes videos for YouTube, but I am extremely grateful for all that it has offered me so far.

3) Was video editing an obstacle that you had to overcome or did this process always come easy to you?

I wouldn’t call it an obstacle, I like to think of it more like a challenge. When I started making videos I had no notions at all about cinematography. I would just turn the camera on, point it at what I wanted to film and start recording. But ever since I was a kid I’ve also had a passion for photography and cinematography, so much that I ended up taking Cinematography in high school. As time went by I started to learn lots of stuff about video making at school, and at the same time I started to find out how to work with video and audio editing programs by myself. As I learn new stuff and discover new programs and functions, I try to improve the quality of my videos.

4) Do you have any new projects for a near future or are you going to continue making covers?

I love to make covers and it is definitely something that I’ll keep on doing for a long time, but even more than that I like to compose and produce original songs. I’ve already published some originals on YouTube and I’ve got tons of others already written. During this summer I’d like to see if I can produce an EP with some of those originals and later send it to some record labels. But if I’m not able to do that, I will at least record and publish another one of the songs that I have written and keep on making covers.

5) Regarding the technology that you use: Do you need any special equipment to produce your songs and videos?

Yes, of course, it requires very specific equipment to produce both music and videos. For the music, I use a Peavey Studio Pro CM1 microphone and an AKG Perception 220 microphone, a Roland HP 207 Piano, a Peavey USB 8 Mixer and a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), which in my case is Adobe Audition. For the videos, I use a Canon EOS 500 D camera, a Toshiba CAMILEO SX500 camera and Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. And, of course, cables, lights, tripods, etc.

6) What is your current smartphone? Why did you choose it?

My current smartphone is an HTC Wildfire. I chose this model because I needed a phone with Wi-Fi connection. During the week I usually get home very late and it comes in handy to be able to access my social networks and my email during the day. Besides, my school has free Wi-Fi, so I decided to search for a smartphone and I was recommended this model. So far, I don’t regret the choice.

7) Almost all smartphones have an application store. Do you usually use those stores? Do you have a favorite application (or application category)?
Yes, I often go to the Android Market (that now is called Play Store) to see the new releases and which apps are most used worldwide. I’m a little addicted to Android apps, so it’s hard for me to choose a favorite one. But the apps I use the most are Facebook, Twitter and Hotmail. I also use Tetris Highscore and Angry Birds a lot, when there’s no internet connection around and I need something to kill the time.
